Today Abbot Ephraim from the Vatopaidi monastery on Mount Athos is likely to be imprisoned inside Korydallos prison in Athens Greece, one of the most notorious prisons in Europe, alongside murderers and other serious criminals.  Abbot Ephraim who has not been found guilty of any charges, and is being held in custody according to the Greek government as he may flee "Greek justice".

Having faced an avalanche of international derision over the state of the Greek economy, does the Greek government now need more bad headlines, by putting a monk behind bars at Christmas, over a land deal that in fact never materialised, and the Greek taxpayer lost no money?

The Greek needs to act swiftly to prevent universal criticism it will face if Abbot Ephraim is imprisoned, its Christmas for goodness sake.
