The Greek government is becoming increasingly impatient at the exploits on its islands by British and other foreign tourists and has vowed to prosecute both tourists and bar owners for excessive drinking and lewd behaviour.

Custodial sentences and deportations are being planned for British tourists who fall foul of Greek law and order this summer.

The Greek tourism minister Aris Spiliotopoulos said much of this behaviour was due to profit-hungry bar owners supplying tourists with drinks fortified with industrial alcohol.

Reuters reported that tourism accounts for a fifth of the economy in Greece with 15 million tourists a year, and estimated 5 million from the UK alone.

A 20-year-old British woman on the island of Crete, has been charged with strangling to death her newborn baby in a hotel room. A few days later, a 17-year-old Briton died of intoxication outside a Zakynthos bar.

The Foreign Office said it has received 48 reports of rape of Britons in Greece last year, most of them allegedly perpetrated by fellow Britons. Last year, residents of Malia staged a march against British tourists.
