George Alogoskoufis the Greek Finance Minister was pelted with eggs at a meeting held at the London School of Economics last night by Greek left wing extremists.

The meeting which was organised by the Hellenic Observatory of the London School of Economics was an opportunity for Mr Alogoskoufis to outline the strategy of the Greek government in dealing with the global credit crunch, instead the speech was halted by Greek students shouting "justice to workers and no more rights to the bosses".

Eggs were thrown at the Minister and the intervention of the host of the event Professor Featherstone was required to shield Mr Alogoskoufis from further attacks by the left wing students.

An LSE spokesman confirmed the event was stewarded in the "normal way" with one ticket steward and the organising group of stewards, plus security staff within the LSE building.

The Metropolitan Police are currently investigating the matter, it should also be made clear that the LSE have no evidence that the incident involved students of the university.

The tensions within Greece have been boiling over with the economic crisis engulfing the economy, with public sector workers  striking and the Greek government announcing cuts to pensions and welfare provisions.  Reuters has reported that unemployment in Greece has reached 7.1% economists warned that jobless figures were set to rise more sharply.
