A bomb has exploded in the Sintagma Square area of Athens causing limited damage to the surrounding area according to local media, with reports of more bomb threats at Greek Parliament building, and the Grand Bretagne Hotel in central Athens.

A phone call was made to the Greek  national newspaper "Eleftherotypia" earlier today with a caller claiming that "within 17 minutes a bomb will explode at Sintagma sqaure".  The bomb then exploded causing minor damage to buildings near to the explosion, with debris flying.

The Greek media have been reporting that this is the first time the Greek Parliament has been targeted by terrorist groups for attack, with the debris of the bomb causing minor damage to windows near the explosion.

The General Secretary of the ruling PASOK party Christos Papoutsis said to the state broadcaster ERT that "this is an entirely undemocratic attack and will be dealt with decisively by the Greek government".

The centre of Athens has seen CCTV and "high level" security installed following previous attacks, which have seen various banks and foreign embassies being attacked.  An inquiry will now take place as to how the area of such security could have been hit with apparent ease.

Various groups who are linked to the November 17 group are likely to have been behind the bombing, with anarchists groups to be main suspects.

The Greek government has been under severe scrutiny by the European Union auditors and being forced to make deep and painful cuts to the public sector, which has caused a great deal anger of across Greece.
