237 illegal immigrants have caused the Greek capital to become a "war zone" according to local media, following the storming of the law faculty at the University of Athens. The Greek police force have locked down all public transport in central Athens to prevent more immigrants and their supporters travelling to the law faculty in the university who have demanded that all illegal immigrants become "legal" and granted citizenship of Greece, something the Greek government has refused to do. The University of Athens cannot be entered by the police following the deaths of students during the seventies; it is believed the immigrants knew that police could not arrest them inside the university.
Many of the illegal immigrants are from Iraq, Afghanistan and Turkey, and have threatened to stay inside the law faculty until death, with more immigrants in Athens travelling to the university.
Greeks have complained that central Athens areas like Saint Panteleimon have become so dangerous, because of immigrants that they are in fear of their own lives. Demitrius Saloukiotis speaking to the London Daily News who lives in the Saint Paneteleimon area said:
"I don't these people to tell me in my own country what to do, we don't need them and we don't want them. We have an economic crisis here, we do not have jobs, if they want a better life they should go else where, they are not welcome in Greece".
There are an estimated 1 million illegal immigrants with many travelling from Turkey into Greece, the European Union has identified Greece as the one of the weakest and most porous borders for illegal immigrants into the European Union.
