London's second busiest airport could see its train station wreaked in a spending squeeze. Ministers were warned that Gatwick would be "unfit for purpose" if the government persisted in slashing investment. £30m to £9m
£30 million had been expected to get the link up to speed, however only £9 million has been earmarked. Express services from Victoria and Thameslink trains could grind to a halt as the airport handles more and more flights. The airport would be a major gateway for the 2012 games. Conservative council leader Henry Smith said in a letter to Transport Minister Ruth Kelly and Olympic minister Tessa Jowell that the government’s approach: "will leave Gatwick unfit for purpose for the Olympic period and beyond." The Office of Rail Regulation said there was a consultation period after the original "draft resolution." Photo: Flickr
