Eight men are standing trial at the Old Bailey accused of shooting dead a Yardie outside a nightclub in Streatham. Three gunmen followed Jamaican Garry Guthrie and his pal Rowan Williams from the Starlight Rooms club on Hopton Road in the early hours of October 22, 2007. They cornered the 33-year-old 'Curry Kid' from West Norwood and blasted him point blank in the chest - he died soon after arriving at hospital. Williams, 33, was shot in the back of the neck but managed to escape down Streatham High street. The accused
Junior Cameron, 26, Michael Wabara, 24, Ashley Thomas, 21, Darrell Albert, 28, Nathan Cross, 28, Courtney Hutchinson, 24, and Simon Rhodes-Butler, 32, are now standing trial for murder. An eighth man, Byron Cole, has also been charged but is not before the court, Buzzed by blacked out cars
The victims were driving home from the club with friends when two black cars buzzed past them as they waited at a junction.
One clipped their vehicle as it swerved round them, mounting the pavement. The two black cars then performed 180 degree handbrake turns to face in the direction of the victims, the court heard. When they got out to investigate, the gunmen opened fire. No motive
The prosecution said they had established no motive for the murder but surviving victim Rowan Williams thinks he was targeted because he was with Guthrie, the court heard. Rhodes-Butler and Cameron, of no fixed address; Hutchinson, of Nez Pearce Court, Christchurch Road, Tulse Hill, Thomas, of Coalville Terrace, Ladbroke Grove, Albert, of no fixed address; Cross, of Ashton House, Chryssell Road, Kennington, and Wabara, of Risley Avenue, Tottenham, deny murder and attempted murder. Cameron and Albert both deny possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life. The trial continues.
