The leader of Barnet Council and prospective parliamentary candidate for the Conservative party in Finchley and Golders Green Mike Freer, played down the tag of a "pioneer" during the Conservative party conference and admitted that the title was "too grand".
Freer underlined the importance of the role played by local councils in responding to the needs of the local area and said:
"The Conservative party believes in localism. I don't think either Barnet, Hammersmith or Fulham two of us who are at the forefront of some radical thinking is a blueprint. If we have a good idea the front bench will say that’s interesting and if it can be applied elsewhere across the country".
In terms of Freer's own campaign to become MP for Finchley and Golders Green he said:
"My approach will remain the same as before, continued hard work on the ground and listening to peoples concerns and hopefully this is reflected in council policy and If get elected to Parliament. The people in Finchley should see no difference".
In terms of the fundamental differences between Labour and Conservative Freer described the Tories as "telling it as it is" and not spinning and deceiving the public like Labour.
Barnet council made the headlines over the weekend with the revelation that one of its councillors had been claiming an £800 allowance even though he had been away on holiday in Australiasia, the Barnet Times in a report said:
"Christopher Harris, 35, has been 10,000 miles away in Australasia since July 21, but has still been receiving more than £800-a-month in allowances."
