First trucks, now fisherman fuel demos

After road haulers brought London to a standstill last week, it's the turn of Britain's fisherman to decamp on the city's streets over rising fuel costs.

Up to 500 are expected according to representatives from the fishing industry. The demonstration follows rowdy protests in Dublin, Paris and other European cities. Ports have been blocked and even free fish handed out to win public support as the mighty Spanish and Portuguese fleets have been brought to a halt.

'Constant' losses

Fishermen claim they lose money every time they go out to sea, along with quota cuts and catches that are sold at auction make their profession unsustainable.

The government is to press ahead with a 2p rise in fuel tax despite having one of the highest oil duties in Europe. The price of fuel has more than doubled in a year.
