Do you remember those words ? It was Clive Dunn in Dad's Army playing the part of Corporal Jones, the more he shouted those words the more you worried and maybe that's why our own Chancellor is staying pretty quiet in these turbulent times. One thing I am thankful for today is the wise words of the former Conservative Chancellor Kenneth Clarke, their he was this morning on Sky News speaking in a confident manner about the merger talks between Halifax Bank of Scotland and the Lloyd's TSB Group. He praised the fact the market is working through its problems even in these troubled economic times. Nick Clegg the leader of the Liberal Democrats at their annual conference waded into the Prime Minister Gordon Brown and praised the economic guru Vince Cable MP who rightly predicted the fall in house prices and a weakening in the UK's economy. In fact I am of the opinion the Prime Minister should offer Vince Cable MP the job of Chancellor, he is a intelligent well spoken individual who would bring much needed confidence to number 11 Downing Street. But what can you and I do to help get the economy moving again in the right direction ? Well for starters work a little harder, don't over extend yourself with credit cards and loans, open up a savings account with a bank or building society save a pound or two a day. Do the sums if you can make it five pounds a day five days a week ( less than the price of a packet of cigarettes !) after a year you'll have £1260.00p of your money and not a debt hanging around your neck. This will help you plan for the future and at the same time help the banking sector with liquidity. What can the Government do, well they need to ensure the battered construction industry doesn't collapse. With house builders laying off workers local councils should seek partnerships with the private sector and build the homes the nation requires. Remember in the darkest days of the depression in the 1920's America built their way out of the slump. We also need to ensure projects like the Olympic's and Crossrail employ British workers who may well have lost jobs after the recent round of redundancies within the construction industry. We all including the Government need to heed the advice of Mervyn King the Governor of the Bank of England, he warned everybody over two years ago we needed to be a little more careful with our finances. But whatever the future holds for us here in the UK I know one thing, I shall not be doing a Corporal Jones "Don't Panic Don't Panic" !
