The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) and preferred developers Lend Lease are on track to start construction of the Olympic Village this summer, the latest images of the site published today show.

Images were also published showing the successful clearance of the area that will link the Olympic Village and VeloPark during the Games, two derelict 12 storey buildings on the area have been demolished by one of the largest wrecking machines in Europe.Work to create the platform for the start of construction follows the completion of clearance work on the Olympic Village site.

Twenty eight buildings were demolished in total, including the largest building on the Olympic Park site - the former Frigoscandia factory - and the tallest buildings on the site - the two 12 storey former University of East London buildings. The ODA has to date recycled or reused over 90 per cent of demolition materials on the Olympic Park site in line with its sustainability commitments.

The Olympic Village will accommodate 17,000 athletes and officials during the Olympic Games and 6,500 in the Paralympic Games. After 2012, it will leave the legacy of up to 4,000 new homes, many of which will be affordable, with the new communities supported by new parks, open space, community facilities and transport links.

ODA Chief Executive David Higgins said:

“With clearance work on the Olympic Village site completed and work to build the site platform well underway, Lend Lease and ourselves are on track for the start of construction this summer. We are committed to London 2012 being a truly sustainable Games, reusing materials from the site of the Olympic Village elsewhere on the Olympic Park will help us keep sustainability at the heart of the Games and its legacy.”
