Today drivers have already started filling up vehicles with petrol pumps from 5am in central and north London experiencing unusually high volumes in anticipation of the planned four day strike starting on Friday. BBC Londoner callers to the Big George show have said that professional drivers like cab drivers will be driving slower than normal to preserve fuel over the period of the strike. John Hutton the Business Secretary of the Government has said that emergency fuel delivery plans will be implemented to avoid any serious disrupting in fuel supply. The Prime Minister issued a statement saying that he cautioned the public against panic buying of petrol and diesel ahead of the threatened strike. "We believe that this strike is unnecessary, and we would want to ensure that nothing was done that inconvenienced the public, but the most responsible thing the public can do is to continue to buy as normal." Despite the assurances by the government petrol stations in London have already seen drivers filling up tanks in anticipation of the strikes. A litre of unleaded in London today has reached 122p with diesel at 135p.
