A tower block inferno that has claimed the lives of six innocent Londoners in Camberwell has been described as one of the most serious fires in London in recent times.

BBC London radio presenter Big George Webley broadcast a statement from a Fire Brigade spokesman who said:

"Eighteen fire engines, a range of special appliances and over 100 firefighters are fighting a serious fire in a tower block in Havil Street,  Camberwell this evening. The fire is believed to have started on the fourth floor and to have spread rapidly to the 11th floor. Three children are believed to have died and three adults in the fire."

Around 30 people have been rescued and eight adults and eight children have been taken to hospital. Fire crews equipped with extended duration breathing apparatus are working very hard to reach those still affected and are carrying out an exhaustive search of the building.
