Mayor Boris Johnson has added his name to the growing calls for Greece to leave the Euro in his weekly column in the Daily Telegraph with an attack on the Coalition Government "we are all still kidding ourselves that the moment of reversal can be avoided. All the other governments of Europe including, alas, the Coalition are pretending that Greece can remain in the euro". The Mayor of London has said that the UK should not be providing funds to bailout Greece and we should "stop chucking good money after bad". The Greek Government must find 12 billion euro's (10.6 billion pounds) by July or face a default of its loans, euro zone finance ministers have already pledged to cover this provided the Greek parliament first passes new austerity steps.
Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou has installed Evangelos Venizelos to finance minister who has to face the sheer volume of Greeks understating their incomes on their tax returns that about half of all households who file tax returns essentially pay no income tax at all.
The Financial Times in a report said:
“There is no disagreement on the aim, but there is complete disagreement on the methods,” the new Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos
The markets are still unclear how Mr Venizelos intends to implement austerity measures and structural reforms with growing levels of discontent inside Greece with daily protests.
