Anorthosis Famagusta the Cypriot football team which has confounded pundits by the teams remarkable form in the UEFA Champtions League is embroiled in a scandal with the teams president held in prison over alleged embezzlement charges.

It emerged on Friday in Cyprus that the clubs president Andreas Panteli was detained in a Cypriot prison after a complaint by members of the board over the alleged theft of 418,498 euros ($541,400) and a separate attempt to extract 500,000 euros from the club.

The story was the top news item on the island ranking higher than the peace talks between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders, all because the Anothosis captured the hearts and minds of the Cypriot public with their performances in Europe.

The fans and supporters and manager Temur Ketsbaia are behind Andreas Panteli with calls being made for the rest of the board to resign forthwith.

Ketsbaia is being linked with several jobs in Europe and is rumoured to be extremely unhappy with the scandal.
