A man killed by a train at Enfield fled police who wanted to check the insurance of the car he was travelling in.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission say three special constables are being investigated over the death. Investigators said the officers chased a car up to a level crossing before a passenger jumped out, ran down the rails and was killed by a train.

Cork man Mircea Adam was travelling in a car with two other passengers who were arrested.

CCTV footage showed the marked police car was 20ft behind the Mercedes when Mr Adam was hit. Police were following the vehicle for just 90 seconds after pulling it over moments earlier - the driver got out, jumped back in and sped off, sirens and lights were activated.

The car stopped at Enfield Lock crossing and the driver and Mr Adam, 20, jumped the barriers and fled on foot.

Adam was hit by a northbound train and died, the driver escaped uninjured - he and a third man have been released on bail.
