North London residents under a Conservative government will see a "moratorium" on plans to close A&E and Consultant led maternity units, including Chase Farm Hospital.

The Conservative Shadow Health Minister Mike Penning MP on a visit to Chase Farm hospital said:

" The Conservative Party does not support the idea of closing consultant led maternity units, and we will impose a moratorium on day one of an incoming Conservative government on these closures and the closure of a 24hr A&E Maternity Unit".

The moratorium will allow for a clinical review of the services to judge what the local needs are, and not base these decisions on simple cost cutting requirements that has led to the imposition of these closures by the Labour government.

Mr Penning went on to say;

" The current changes are being forced through at a very fast pace, and I am concerned that they will have gone to far for a new government to stop them, so that is one reason why we need a general election as soon as possible. If too many changes have taken place, for example the closure of  the consultant led maternity unit, then it will be difficult to reverse the decision."

Nick de Bois. Prospective MP for Enfield North commented;

" We have now had David Cameron, Leader of the Conservative Party, Andrew Lansley, Shadow Health Secretary and Mike Penning, Shadow minister for Health all say the same thing, that only a Conservative government will give Enfield residents any chance of saving their local A&E and our Consultant led maternity services. The Labour government are ruthlessly pressing ahead as quickly as possible to put the cuts in place, but hopefully we can have an early General Election to halt their plans going through."
