Detectives investigating the murders of a mother and daughter have managed to trace their next of kin, and - even though formal identification is still awaited - can issue their names.

Police are still appealing for witnesses and information after the mother and daughter were stabbed to death in east London.

Officers were called at approx 07.30hrs on Thursday 12 August to reports of a woman stabbed in Stansfeld Road E16, near the junction with Jasper Road E16.

Police and the ambulance service attended and Svetlana Zolotovska, 40, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Inquiries at the scene led police to an address in Leamouth Road, East Ham E6 which was found to be on fire.

Officers entered the property and on the ground floor discovered Antonia Belska, 70, suffering stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Post-mortems later gave cause of death for the younger woman as stab wounds to the neck, chest and abdomen, and for her mother as stab wounds to the chest and abdomen.

The Fire Brigade attended and extinguished the fire, which was burning in an upstairs room.

A man aged 42 years was subsequently found in the loft area of the property with numerous injuries. He was taken to an east London hospital where his condition is stable. He remains under arrest.

An incident room has opened at Barking under DCI Phil Rickells (HSCC).

DCI Rickells said: "We know the younger victim left her address in east London at 07.20hrs to walk to work. She was attacked at the bus stop in Stansfeld Road. We have traced several witnesses but would like to speak to anyone who may have been in the area at that time.

"The elderly lady had been staying with her daughter after arriving in the UK 3 months ago".

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Incident Room on 020 8345 1570; if you wish to remain anonymous call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
