Crime Desk - Comments of Lambeth Borough Commander Lambeth Borough Commander, Nick Ephgrave, said:
"Today my thoughts and prayers are with the five year old girl, the 35 year old man and their families.
The investigation in to this shooting is being led by operation Trident, but Lambeth officers were in attendance at the scene and continue to provide support to the investigation.
Whilst exact details of what happened remain to be established, what is clear is that two innocent bystanders have been caught up in a violent attack on other persons.
I want to make it clear to all those who live or work in Lambeth that the investigation into this matter will continue until those responsible for this indiscriminate shooting are identified and brought to justice.
In the meantime, I have directed that all available resources be deployed to Stockwell and the surrounding area to provide a very visible presence and to seek to prevent any further outbreaks of violence.
Police officers in London are being warned to expect more attacks from the public in the following months, following the violent attack on two police officers in Ealing yesterday.
Despite the two police officers wearing stab-proof vests, an attack took place at approximately 15.00hrs Wednesday 15 December injuring a PC and PCSO from Ealing Borough, who received stab wounds whilst on duty. The attack has concerned many serving officers with several privately expressing this is a rising trend, given the tensions that have emerged in the last months on the streets of London. One PC who contacted the London Daily News and wanted to remain anonymous said:
"With the way things are turning we need protection, I have seen more anger and hatred on the streets of London than at any other time in my ten years as a police officer. My colleagues are now far more vigilant and self-aware when going to crime incidents, in case of attacks".
London police officers on the whole are not allowed to carry fire arms, as opposed to many police forces in the European Union who routinely carry guns with live ammunition.
The stabbing which was a result of a revenue collection operation on New Broadway, Ealing W5, a PCSO challenged a man who was behaving suspiciously. The team called for assistance and the man proceeded to attack the PCSO and PC who both suffered multiple stab wounds.
The PCSO, aged 27, received treatment at hospital and has been discharged.
The PC, aged 23, remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.
A man aged 30 was arrested at the scene and taken to a north London police station. A knife was recovered at the scene
Speaking this evening, Det. Chief Superintendent Andy Rowell (Ealing Borough Commander) said: "The Homicide and Serious Crime Command will be conducting the investigation into this incident and it is inappropriate for me to say further on this at this stage.
"Whilst this is no doubt a shocking incident, it is extremely rare for police officers to receive injuries of this nature whilst on duty. I would like to commend the officers for their actions at the incident and also thank members of the public who came to help them.
"The officers and their families are being fully supported by the Metropolitan Police Service at what is a difficult time for them and I ask that their privacy is respected."
An incident room has opened under DCI John McFarlane (HSCC) on 020-8721 4205.
Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward and contact police.
