By Gemma Brosnan In a City saturated with Italian chains and with bigger names lingering behind, it is worth taking a trip elsewhere to avoid becoming permanently disillusioned with all things pasta. Tucked away from the bustle of Sloane Avenue in a delightfully local spot is a hidden Italian gem, already ridiculously popular with the smarter Chelsea set and about to become even more so with the launch of a takeaway service. Elistano’s focus on fresh, quality ingredients which are beautifully and artistically presented continues to be a winning combination, championing a variety and flavour which truly masks their price. With a good range of fresh pasta dishes, classic Italian Milaneses and Terre di Chetti and Sangiovese house wines starting at £15, this is a great place for a meal that is far less pretentious and much more affordable than many other Italian restaurants in the area. Head chef Alexander Baillieu took over the Elistano kitchen in 2007 with an emphasis on the freshest seasonal ingredients and explained the philosophy behind the food: “Though the Insalata Vitaminica and the Elistano House Dressing are untouchable, I was given the daunting task of taking the menu forward. I am delighted to have evolved the menu to include fresh pasta, bread baked on the premises, purchasing seasonal produce directly from the markets on a daily basis and adding my favourite Italian dishes of Insalata di Gamberoni and Spaghetti allo Scoglio.” The lively, relaxed atmosphere is visually enhanced with Elistano’s support of local artists showcasing a range of latest exhibitions, renowned celebrity photographer John Stoddart’s being the latest to grace the walls, featuring subjects including Pierce Brosnan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Elizabeth Hurley and Sean Bean. Summer customers can not only indulge in al fresco dining on the adorable tables outside, but have the luxury of some ‘Eli’ magic at home as part of Elistano’s new takeaway service, offering classics such as the Margherita and the Pizza Elistano (Parma ham, rocket, mozzarella and tomato, with prices ranging from £9.50 to £12.50. However you decide to sample the delights of Elistano, make sure you do it soon, before the neighbourhood secret is out. Elistano is situated at 25-27 Elystan Street, London, SW3 3NT and is open seven days a week.
