The Rail and Maritime Union have scored another victory for its members on the London Underground, securing the London Living Wage for cleaners. 700 staff with four contractors were about stage a 48-hour walkout - but management caved yet again with an improved pay deal. Massive breakthrough
It was described as a "massive breakthrough" by union leaders and is the second time in two day that managers have surrendered to the tube unions over pay. Workers will now receive the LLW of £7.45. Tube Lines, involved in the maintenance strike, get an extra 60p an hour in September and another £1.30 an hour in April. Metronet workers get the full increase in September. RMT boss Bob Crow took a swipe at Mayor Boris Johnson calling it a huge improvement on the contract he presented - claiming that some members would have had to wait until 2012 for the LLW.
