Politicians on both sides of the divided Mediterranean island were declaring the decision to open up Ledra Street as one of the most sigfnificant developments in the history of this troubled island.

Ledra Street which is one of the main streets of Nicosia was partitioned following the inter-communal fights between Greeks and Turks, and a buffer zone was patrolled by the UN.  Now the street is open with no barriers allowing free movement.

The President of the Republic of Cyprus will be in London this weekend to speak with the diaspora Greek and Turkish Cypriots of the capital, hopes are now heightened that a solution will be agreed and this intractable international dispute is finally put to rest.
