Newham Council is setting the trend in the nation, not for recycling, not for crime prevention or even educational attainment in its schools, no none of that.  Joe Duckworth its Chief Executive is sitting proud following a report in the Sunday Telegraph that shows his salary at £240,000 a year or £20,000 per month.

Newham council pays its leader more money than the Prime Minister who is paid £188,000 a year, and it is the same council that has increased its council tax recently.

Other London council chiefs making the headlines include:

-  Leo Bolland of Barnet pay estimated between £160,287 - £187,404
-  Gareth Daniel - Brent £164,721 - £185,310
- Moira Gibb - Camden - £163,350 - £199,650
- Tim Shields - Hackney - £174,000
- John Foster - Islington - £200,000
