Long suffering users of Clapham Junction rail station were warned not to expect much from a National Rail revamp. Nearly 20million Commuters at Britain’s busiest station have put up with overcrowding, damp subways and dilapidated walkways for years. Hundreds of millions of pounds were promised to London's major stations in a much needed £3.25billion upgrade of facilities - Clapham Junction was not one of them. The South-East London hub, which was recently named the country’s second worst station, "would barely get a new lick of paint," according to Wandsworth council. Barking was voted the countries fifth shabbiest station. Money split between 10 stations Transport Secretary Lord Adonis said he will set aside £50million for initial works to the country’s ten worst stations - borough bosses claim an overhaul of the station entrances alone £35million while a full station upgrade would be way in excess of £100million. The £50million will be split with the other nine stations on 'Britain's worst stations' list; it is not known what Clapham Junction's cut will be. Wandsworth Council’s transportation spokesman Guy Senior said: "£50 million cannot fix the country’s ten worst railway stations - all the Government is offering is a lick of paint. Commuters hoping to see a significant improvement are set for another disappointment. Ministers have known about the state of Clapham Junction for years. We want real investment and a real timetable to tackle the station’s underlying issues."
