Every one of the 44 police officers that applied for anonymity at the inquest for Jean Charles de Menezes have had their requests approved. Cops will give evidence at the Coroners Court from behind a screen and be given code names, a pre-inquest hearing decided yesterday. Safety
Coroner Sir Michael Wright QC, argued that as the officers were still involved in front line anti terror and serious crimes activities - they and their family could be put at risk. Not all of the cops called to give evidence applied for anonymity; some will give oral or written evidence. Mr de Menezes was shot dead by Metropolitan Police anti terror officers in Stockwell tube station in 22 July 2024 after being mistaken for a terror suspect. His family has attacked the decision, calling "blanket anonymity" a hindrance to public scrutiny of public officials and questioned why so many people had been granted aonymity. The inquest is due to start on September 22.
