On the day of the conviction of the three suspects in the Ben Kinsella murder case today City Hall has announced that 140 arrests have been under "Operation Hawk" the major new anti-knife crime operation launched by the Met Police.

Deputy Mayor for Policing, Kit Malthouse, today congratulated the Metropolitan Police for the success of Operation Hawk, a major new anti-knife crime operation launched this morning.

More than 140 people were arrested after hundreds of police officers raided addresses across London of those suspected of youth and gang related violence. Kit Malthouse met officers involved in Operation Hawk at the Metropolitan Police command centre in Lambeth earlier today and congratulated them on their success.

Kit Malthouse also welcomed the convictions of three people found guilty of the tragic murder of Ben Kinsella at the Old Bailey earlier today.

Kit Malthouse said,
“Today we have sent a clear signal that knife crime and gang violence will not be tolerated in the capital. The raids conducted by the police this morning will make Londoners safer and reaffirm our absolute determination to punish those involved in gang and knife crime.

‘I want to pay tribute to the bravery of every officer involved in this morning’s raids and to those officers who secured the convictions of those responsible for the horrific murder of Ben Kinsella last year.

Analysis: The changing fight in Pakistan
What I am finding on this visit is as alarming as it is reassuring, CNN's Nic Robertson says. Checkpoints are becoming more common, but so are Taliban attacks. The government's commitment to defeating the Taliban appears as firm as it was when it began the Swat offensive during my last visit. But as the contours of the fight become clearer, the prospect of a swift victory looks ever more distant.
