Road users are today being warned of massive disruptions following the scrapyard fire in Mill Hill on Friday, which resulted in the M1 being closed approaching north London.

Today congestion has been escalating around the A4O6 as travelling fans to the FA Cup semi-final try to find alternative routes.

The Highways agency do not expect the M1 to open on Saturday with further checks taking place by engineers to establish if it is safe for cars to use the motorway.

The Highways agency said:

"The M1 is closed in both directions (northbound and southbound), between junctions 1 and 4, due to a fire in a premises adjacent to the carriageway. The motorway will be re-opened as soon as it is safe to do so.

A diversion route is in place.  Traffic wishing to join the the M1 northbound at Staples Corner is advised to follow the Black Diamond diversion symbol.  Traffic on the M1 southbound is advised to follow the Black Circle diversion symbol."
