Heavy snow has brought the capitals roads to a standstill with the police advising on non-essential travel off the roads.

Callers to LBC presenter Clive Bull reported that roads in the centre of the capital were brought to a standstill with dozens of cars involved in car accidents and roads in effect "impassable".

The Essex stretch of the M25 has been closed and the AA and recovery services are struggling to keep up with demand.

Temperatures are set to remain below -3 degrees centigrade and snow fall is expected to be up to 15cm deep in places around London.
