The UK is officially the most violent European nation according to a report by Eurostat, which rates the UK as the country with the highest rate of violent crime.
The report by the European Commission highlights that the UK saw a 77 per cent increase in murders, robberies, assaults and sexual offences in the UK since Labour came to power, blowing the myth away that Labour has dealt with crime.
In another startling revelation the European Commission has said that the total number of violent offences per head of population is higher in the UK than any other country in Europe as well as the US, Canada, Australia and South Africa.
We had a greater number of murders in 2007 than any other EU country 927, the fifth highest robbery rate in the EU, and the highest absolute number of burglaries with double the crimes committed in Germany and France.
There were 5.4 million crimes recorded in the UK in 2007 "more than 10 a minute - second only to Sweden" report the Daily Telegraph.
The Metropolitan Police is believed to be looking at making cuts of around £366 million of its £3.9 billion annual budget in the next three years despite having the weight of securing the 2012 Olympics and the prospect of a crime wave provoked by the rise of unemployment and the deep recession the capital is experiencing, the London Daily News reported this week.
The Conservative Party's response to these figures came in a statement by the shadow Home Secretary Chris Grayling who said in The Sun:
"This is a real damning indictment of this Government’s comprehensive failure to tackle the deep-rooted social problems in our society, and the knock-on effect on crime and anti-social behaviour.”
