The UK is choosing pizza over other fast foods with a reported £749million a year spent on pizza, with leading retailer Tesco launching the "Tesco Finest Pizza range" claiming that the best ingredients from all over Italy are being used to create restaurant quality pizzas, each taking their inspiration from traditional Italian recipes.

"Tesco Finest pizza" bases are made using only the best 00-grade Italian flour and traditional Italian methods such as hand-stretching the dough before it is stone-baked to perfection. Toppings feature speciality Italian meats including Rostello ham and Salami Sardo, alongside vine ripened tomatoes, bursting with flavour, melt-in-the-mouth Italian cheeses and herbs. According to a Tesco spokesman "It’s almost like having your very own Italian pizza chef at home!"

The new Tesco Finest pizza range is available in Tesco stores with finest palettas and large pizzas are priced at £4.50 each, whilst the medium pizzas are priced at £4.00.

The UK now has over 12,500 restaurants that specialise in Italian food with 12,000 Indian restaurants and 10,500 fish and chip shops.

The survey also revealed that 90 per cent of Britons eat pizza at least once a week, with the margherita still ranked as the most popular.

This is very interesting. Good to know the simple cheese and tomato is still ranked most highly. Alis at 3coursepizza.wordpress.com- see my blog for local pizza reviews!
