Review John Kaponi - Canteen 55 Baker Street, London W1U 8EW tel: 0845 686 1122 Born and brought up with the best fish and chip shops in London has allowed me to self-label myself a "fish & chip connoisseur" so when the chance arose to review Canteen which boasts "Great British Food" as its unique selling point I obliged.
Canteen on Baker Street, does not strike you from the outside as somewhere that serves "fish finger sandwiches" but that is what was on the menu, along with porridge, eggs on toast, potted duck, piccalilli and toast and the rest. In essence the food is pretty much what you would get in a good pub, but in a stylish, well lit restaurant in central London.
For our starters we kicked off with the fish finger sandwich £5.75, and potted duck £7.50, which kicked off the evening well. The service throughout was excellent, with waiting staff managing the customers needs well. The main course consisted of cod and chips £11 and steak and chips £16.50. The fish was well cooked, the cod was white, batter light, but the chips were sub-standard, and the use of fresh potatoes is highly recommended in future. The steak was cooked well, and side dishes apart from the mushy peas all presented and tasted well.
Our desert of cheese cake, and steamed syrup sponge with custard, finished off a good evening.
Tips for the Canteen, ideal for a lunch with a colleague; not a place for a romantic dinner, but ideal to take the kids to enjoy good old British food. The team behind Canteen have thought carefully about how to underline the value of British food to London, it still has a place, and if cooked and presented properly people still demand a a good roast, indeed Canteen offer a daily roast.
Expect to pay about £25-£30 per head, service on top.
