"If David Cameron becomes Prime Minister part of what he wants to do in the world and Europe will need European structures" - prime minister of Sweden Frederik Reinfeldt

By John Kaponi

David Cameron the leader of the Conservative Party is under intense pressure from mainstream leaders of the European Union to remain within the European Peoples Party group and part of the Christian Democrats when he becomes prime minister, to ensure that major manifesto commitments on climate change and market reforms are agreed on an EU level.

Leading the calls for the Conservative leader to retain the Conservative party's links with the EPP is the Swedish Prime Minister Frederik Reinfeldt who is believed to see "eye-to-eye" with Cameron on issues like climate change, to labour market reform with the Guardian reporting that "Cameron does not want to sit in the same group as him."

The London Daily News has also learned that leading Conservative MEP's have expressed concern to David Cameron over splitting from the EPP in private discussions but are prepared to agree publicly with the Conservative leader for the sake of "showing a united front".  One senior Conservative source said:

"I am against leaving the EPP I cannot see what the tangible benefits will be to the Conservatives in Europe leaving a group we have worked well together with for so many years.  I will support Cameron and the party's decision to leave the EPP but I do not agree with it one bit".

The Lisbon Treaty is likely to be enacted during the lifetime of the Swedish presidency with the Guardian quoting the Swedish Prime Minister Reinfeldt as saying:

"I will push on to try to get the final ratification in place.  Then it is up and working".
