Mayor Boris Johnson has encouraged 1.1 million Londoners to "dust off their dormant bikes" as he launched the capital's 'Summer of Cycling' this morning.

Transport for London figures show that while one in three people have access to bicycles, only half of these have actually used a bike in the past 12 months.

With child obesity levels increasing and the level of heart related deaths on the rise also, this proposal from "cycle-phil" Mayor Johnson is a step to get more Londoner's "on their bike".

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, announced Sky Sports sponsorship of this year's London Freewheel event, due to take place on 21st September. The Mayor joined Sky Sports News presenter Georgie Thompson and cyclists from across London to launch the capital's 'Summer of Cycling' in front of the London Eye this morning. Transport for London figures show that only half of people who have access to bikes have actually used them in the past 12 months.
