The Prime Minister David Cameron is believed according to a report in the Daily Telegraph to announce a consultation on the creation of a new airport for London on the Thames, also known as "Boris island airport".

The Conservative party blocked plans for a third runway at Heathrow, and has been pushing for high speed rail links.

The coalition Government has been divided over the issue of airport expansion with Nick Clegg the Deputy Prime Minister blocking a formal announcement of the government’s aviation strategy, which was meant to have taken place on January 3, now expected in March.

The Prime Minister according to the Daily Telegraph report is "supportive of the proposed airport but will make a final decision on the basis of the consultation process".

Other opponents of the Boris island airport include Virgin Atlantic chief executive Steve Ridgway who said last year:

"Its just not do-able or deliverable it’s the wrong side of where the locus of the economy is".

"We certainly back the debate about, what "UK limited" is going to do about airport capacity and the long-term economic performance of the economy; we don't support the Thames estuary solution".

90% of airlines have apposed the "Boris island" airport initiative as an alternative to expansion at Heathrow – BAA has since dropped their plans for a third runway in West London and a second at Stansted.
