National Black Police Association head Commander Ali Dizaei has been charged with misconduct in public office and perverting the course of justice. The Metropolitan Police officer is being charged after he made an arrest while off-duty at a restaurant. "Which-hunt"
His suspension in September last year was the height of a poisonous race row at Scotland Yard, the Met's Black Police Association severed ties with the forces senior management and imposed a 'recruitment boycott' of ethnic minority officers. Normal relations have since been restored. MBPA members still believe Dizaei is the victim of a "sustained witch-hunt". In 2003 Mr Dizaei was cleared at the Old Bailey of criminal charges relating to misconduct in public office and perverting the course of justice. CPS lawyer Gaon Hart said:
"These charges relate to an incident in which Mr Dizaei, in his capacity as a police officer, arrested a man on allegations including assault. A decision not to charge that individual was made by the CPS in August 2008." There were also claims he advised a defence team on how to fight a Met prosecution and over the use of his corporate credit card. An investigation was then held by the IPCC and a file submitted to the CPS in November. The NPBA have pledged their full support and the Metropolitan Police Authority said the action was "not a disciplinary sanction" and "should not be taken as a presumption of guilt. The Metropolitan Police Authority announced the suspension last night after receiving back up from the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
