A 15-month-old baby was killed by a suspected drunk driver after a 4X4 mounted the kerb and hit his pushchair yesterday.

Finlay Woods was with his mother and grandmother on their way to collect his seven-year-old sister, Olivia, from school on Cavendish Road, Highams Park near Chingford.

A Toyota 4X4 then swerved and left the road, ploughing into them - trapping the buggy under the vehicle.

'Fleeing taxmen'

There are reports that the the 39-year-old female suspect was trying to dodge taxmen who threatened to take her car over an out-of-date tax disc.

A DVLA spokesman however confirmed that neither they nor their contractors were in the area yesterday.

She was arrested at the scene by the gates of Selwyn Junior School on suspicion of drinking and driving around 3pm.

Locals claim she lived the next street on and owned a nearby café.

Baby was freed

London Fire Brigade said a member of the public managed to free the baby from under the 4x4 before they arrived.

A spokesman for London Ambulance Service said the boy suffered serious injuries and died shortly after arriving at Whipps Cross University Hospital.
