Athens preparing for wildfires

The residents of Athens are preparing for the ecological disaster that is occurring in the Attica area, with a state of emergency declared and all armed forces drafted in to combat the fires that are spreading with the aid of strong winds to the Greek capital.

The Penteli region of Attica according to local Greek media reports is burning to total destruction.

Fire-fighters from across southern Europe have been drafted with planes and helicopters with water to combat fires of over 30 feet.

The Greek capital is at risk of the fires with the fires reaching the Greek international airport Eleftherios Venizelos and spreading ever closer to Athens.

A call of an evacuation of large areas of Attica, the town of St.Stephanos have not been adhered to by homeowners who are prepared to stay in their homes to fight the fires.
