Police are holding a man on suspicion of murder after a man's body was pulled from the river Thames in Wapping yesterday morning. Murder detectives believe the victim in his 20s, had been involved in an altercation which also saw his 17-year-old old female friend suffer a head injury around 9.30 Thursday night by the Shadwell river basin by Wapping. It is thought he drowned. His family have been informed. A 20-year-old man was arrested at his home in east London over the killing and has been bailed until 15 April. A Metropolitan Police spokesman said the victim had been on the waterside with a 17-year-old friend when the confrontation is thought to have taken place. Witnesses told police a group of people were seen in 'some kind of altercation' with the victim and the girl. Detectives are now focusing on whether the victim suffered any injuries, and whether he fell in the water or was pushed. The dead man is believed to have lived locally. It is not known if the teenager was his girlfriend. Appeal
Police have made an appeal to joggers and cyclists who use the London's docks and on the north side of the river near Tower Bridge, who may have seen anything that night. The area is surrounded by housing. Anyone with information about the incident has been urged to contact police.
