This picture shows the £8m velodrome for the 2012 games is on track, say Olympic chiefs. Workers have been digging out the distinctive bowl since August on the site of the old West Ham rubbish tip. There have been concerns over contamination from decaying refuse. Around 48,000 square meters of earth - enough to fill 19 Olympic sized swimming pools was excavated to shape the 60 X 100m arena.
Construction work on the 6,000 capacity velodrome will start early next year with concrete piles, up to 20 meters deep, installed in the ground to create the foundations of the Velodrome building. ODA Chairman John Armitt said the images show we're “on track”. After the Games, a road cycle circuit and mountain bike course will be added. The legacy Velodrome will include a café and other facilities and the venue design includes a 360 degree concourse level offering fantastic views over the Olympic Park, and out to the London skyline.
